Chapter 10, Lesson 2: The Seven Years' War (pp. 241-246)

The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change In the Seven Years' War, the colonists felt less need for British protection when they learned to fight for themselves.

Talk with students about why countries might enter a war. Explain that in the 1750s, the colonies were producing wealth and there was much land in North America settled by France. Then ask them to discuss why they think the French and British might have fought from 1754 to 1763. Ask students who they think won the Seven Years' War and and why.

Check for Understanding

Ask pairs of students to imagine what it would be like to be a colonial couple during the period immediately after the Seven Years' War. The man fought in the war and is coming home to his family in Boston. What might he say to his wife about the war? How might she respond? Would they both agree the war was worth it? Have them role-play a conversation the couple might have had.
Make a list of the results of the Seven Years' War on the board. Then ask students to choose one of the results and make a prediction of how the result will affect Great Britain or the American colonies. Have them draw a picture of their prediction.
