America Will Be
Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 1, Lesson 1: A Tale of One City (pp. 4-8)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Diversity The city of New Orleans, Louisiana, like the entire United States, is a rich example of cultural diversity.
- To help students understand cultural diversity, discuss the different backgrounds of students in the class. Have volunteers share information about where their ancestors lived, how and why they came to your community, and any cultural traditions (such as cooking certain foods, celebrating certain holidays, and singing special songs) that the family enjoys. Help students understand that cultural diversity means that many different kinds of people make up a community.
