Chapter 20, Lesson 3: Role of Citizenship (pp. 519-523)

The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Values and Change Good citizenship includes active participation in government and working to solve problems in a democracy.

Ask students to think about people in their community that they think are good citizens. Ask them what these people do that make them good citizens. List these actions on the board and add to them after students read the lesson.

Tell students to imagine that there is a stream in their community that is polluted and filled with trash. Ask them what a good citizen would do to solve this problem and why solving it would help the community.

Check for Understanding

Ask students to write editorials for their communityÕs newspaper addressing a problem they see within their community. Encourage them to state the problem clearly and to suggest possible solutions that citizens within the community could help implement.
Ask students to create a poster entitled "Good Citizenship in the 21st Century" and illustrate it with ways they can make their community and society a better place today as well as in the future. Have each student to write a "citizenship" message on the poster and sign their name.
