The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflict Discrimination caused conflicts between immigrants and other Californians.

Write the word Discrimination on the board. Have students suggest words that come to mind. Create a word web. Then discuss with students how discrimination affected the lives of the new immigrants both from Europe and Asia.

Check for Understanding

Have students make posters to stop discrimination.
Have students make pictures to illustrate the poem on page 212 or another aspect of discrimination that immigrants experienced.
