The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Conflict/Change The conflict between the Californios
and the Americans over rancho land led to the end of the great ranchos.
- Assign four students the following roles: Californio,
American squatter, Native American, commissioner. Write profiles on the board
for each of the roles by holding a question/answer session in
which students ask questions of each of the four students to
find out what part each had in the struggle over land ownership.

Check for Understanding
- Have students write a paragraph describing the unfair treatment given to rancheros and Indians by Americanos. They should use facts from the lesson in their explanation.

their own advertisements for a California land development.
