The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflict The United States declared war on Mexico and succeeded in gaining control of California.
- Involve students in a discussion of the Bear Flag Revolt and the Mexican War. Students might form two sides in the discussion: the Bear Flaggers and the Californios. With them, discuss and make a chart of what each side lost or gained from the revolt and the war

- In small groups, have students prepare a radio or TV broadcast of the coverage of the Mexican war and the treaty that followed it. Students can tape their broadcasts and groups can compare their coverage.
- Have students illustrate these key vocabulary terms: rebel, nation, treaty.
