I. Growing Interest in California

A. Jedediah Smith was the first person from the United States to go overland to California.

B. The Mexican government feared that Smith's visit showed that the United States wanted to take over California.

C. Abel Stearns, another pioneer, opened a successful trading business in Los Angeles and became a Mexican citizen.

II. More Arrivals in Calfornia

B. John Sutter built a huge settlement that was an important stopping place for other explorers and settlers.

C. Some settlers, like the Donner family party, got hopelessly lost and did not survive the journey.
