I. End of the Missions

A. After the Mexican War for Independence, the Mexican government divided the mission lands and herds among Californio and Mexican families.

B. Many Indians found it hard to survive.

II. Ranchos and Rancheros

B. The rich rancheros owned large pieces of land and many people lived and worked on the ranchos.

C. Some ranchos were small and the rancheros struggled to make a living.
