I. Spain Rediscovers Alta California

A. When Spain learned that Russia wanted to build a colony in Alta California, Spain moved to quickly settled the land it had claimed.

B. Three expeditions were sent from New Spain -- one by sea and two by land.

C. Father Serra established a mission in San Diego and Portolá explored Monterey Bay.

II. Anza Takes Another Route

B. The route proved as difficult as the route from Baja California.
