The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interdependence Groups of inland people found ways to live in mountains, valleys, and deserts.

Have students look at the illustration of the Miwok village on page 44. Using the text and illustration, make a list of the activities students see pictured. Discuss with them how this village life compares to their own community life.

Have students write about a job they would like to do in the Miwok, Maidu, or Mojave village, and why. They should include how their job helps the community.
Invite students to create a picture book, describing life in the Miwok, Maidu, or Mojave village. Students might divide the book into chapters and work on it in groups.
