Chapter 2, Lesson 2: Living on the Rivers and Coasts (pp. 37-41)

I. People from the North

A. The Yurok are one tribe that live along the Klamath River in northwestern California.

B. Salmon was an important food resource for them long ago.

C. The Yurok traded salmon to other tribes in return for things such as dentalium shells, soapstone bowls, or tools.

II. People from the South

A. The Chumash live along the south coast of California.

B. Long ago they depended on the sea for their living.

C. Chumash made baskets and boats which they sealed with asphaltum, a kind of tar that helped keep water out.

D. Chumash villages had chiefs who oversaw what went on in the community.
