Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 2, Lesson 2: Living on the Rivers and Coasts (pp. 37-41)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interdependence The early Californians lived with the land and the natural resources around them.
- Discuss with students the different resources that were available to the early Californians depending on where they lived. What problems might this have posed for the settlers? Suggest two volunteers role play how a fisher and a boat builder help each other. Use the role play to discuss the idea of trade among groups of people.

Check for Understanding
- Invite students to create a story about a Yurok or Chumash boy or girl who lived long ago in California. Their stories should tell about one dayÕs activities and include details that explain how the Yurok and the Chumash depended on the natural resources where they lived.
- Have students create an illustrated list of natural resources the Yurok and the Chumash used for food, clothing, and other things they needed to live. Students should write the name of each group under each resource.
