The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Diversity Immigrants from all over the world have greatly enriched California's culture.
- Draw attention to the map on page 277. Have volunteers trace the immigrant journeys marked on the map. Write the following questions on the board for discussion:
- Why did refugees flee Southeast Asia?
- What types of cultural things do immigrant groups bring with them when they come of to a new country?
- How do various customs and traditions enrich life in California?
Also invite immigrant students and others to share their own stories or stories of people they know or have heard about.

Check for Understanding
- Have students write about one tradition, custom, or special holiday celebrated by their own ethnic groups or by those they know about. Have them explain how these customs enrich California's culture.
- Using their families or classmates as resources, have students prepare a cultural customs poster filling in sections dedicated to food, language, religion, art and music.
