The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Technology For twenty years after World War II,
new industries based on science and new technology grew in California.
- Have students fold a paper in thirds. Have them quick-write or draw
a picture that shows three areas of change in California due to new research and technology: in the air, on the land, and below the sea. Use students' writing and drawings to discuss the changes in aviation, sea exploration, and farming.

Check for Understanding
- Invite students to write newspaper articles about the benefits of
new technology to California just after World War II.
- Have students make props and pantomime the various effects of
research and technology. Examples include: Yeager's flight at super-sonic speed, deep-sea submarine exploration, and farm machines that use new technology.
