I. San Francisco Cleans Up
B. Schmitz's city government took bribes and allowed a few powerful
business leaders to charge high prices.

and voted Mayor Schmitz out of office.
II. California Builds a Better Government
B. He ran for governor and won. He set up rules that stopped
the Southern Pacific Railroad from controlling government.
III. Women Bring Change
B. Women helped bring about new schools and housing, safer
food, and higher pay for laborers.
C. In 1911, the Progressives passed a law giving
California women the right to vote.
