The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Culture California's immigrants made a mark
in California through their many different contributions.
- Use the illustrations and photos in the lesson to begin a
discussion of important contributions that various ethnic groups
have made in California. Have students also name other foods,
landmarks, stores, and inventions that California immigrants
contributed to the state.

Use the Lesson Outline to preview the content of the lesson. You may wish to print it for your students as a guide during reading.
Check for Understanding
- Have students write a newspaper article about the contributions
that different ethnic groups have made to California.
- Have students divide a paper in thirds. Have them label the sections:
Foods, Landmarks, and New Ideas. Then have them make drawings to illustrate
three examples of ethnic contributions to California under each heading. Have
them identify immigrant contributions in their own community.
