The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflict Many conflicts arose because new immigrants to California were discriminated against.

Write the word Discrimination on the board. Have students suggest words that come to mind. Create a word web. Then discuss with students how discrimination affected the lives of the new immigrants both from Europe and Asia.

Have students make posters to stop discrimination.
Have students make a picture poem that recreates either the poem written on page 212 or another aspect of discrimination the immigrants experienced.
