Chapter 7, Lesson 1, Linking California to the East (pp. 164-167)

I. California Feels Cut Off

A. Slow transportation from the East to California made Californians feel cut off from the rest of the country.

B. Transportation problems raised the cost of food and other goods.

C. People looked for better links with the East, such as the Butterfield Stage Line and the telegraph.

D. People dreamed of building a transcontinental railroad.

II. Civil War Begins

B. California decided to side with the Union in the Civil War. The Union fought to keep all the states together in one country.

C. During the war, the flow of goods to California slowed.
