The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interconnectedness Even though California was part of the United States, California had trouble making links to the East.

Write: Problem/Solution heads on the board. Work with students to complete the chart with transportation and communication problems that faced California. Invite students to brainstorm solutions that were not suggested in the lesson.

Check for Understanding

Have students imagine they are reading a telegraph message telling the main idea of each section in the lesson. Have them write out the message. If time permits, have them send and receive their messages using the Morse code on p. 166.
Have students make an illustration for a newspaper advertisement and caption showing any of the types of communication people used to get messages across the country.
