Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 3, Lesson 4: Life on a Mission (pp. 75-79)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflict Missions depended on the hard work of Indians, and at the same time brought the Indian way of life to an end.
- Help students understand the clash of cultures that took place between the Spanish and the Indians by making a chart on the board with three headings: What the Spanish taught Indians, Types of work done on missions, and Mission rules. Together, fill in the chart. Then have students pick out the points from the chart that would have made mission life hard for Indians.

Check for Understanding
- Have students debate the pros and cons of life at the mission. Some students might take the side of discontent Indians and others the side of the padres.
- Have students draw a mission using the picture on page 77 as a model. Then have them choose one of the jobs at a mission and draw it on the back side of their missions. On the front side, have them label where in the mission the job would have been done.
