The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interconnectedness The missions, forts, and towns supported each other.
- Use the map on page 74 to show students how the missions, presidios, and towns formed a network along the California coast. Ask students what kind of person would be able to start eight of these missions. Make a list of adjectives on the board (weak, persistant, ambitious, lazy, cruel, organized, religious, mediocre) and have students choose the ones they feel describe Father Serra or add new adjectives to the list themselves.

Check for Understanding
- The walk along El Camino Real is described in the second person. Rewrite the passage from a first person point of view. Add details to enliven the adventurous trek.
