I. Spain Rediscovers Alta California

A. When Spain learned that Russia wanted to build a colony in California, Spain moved to quickly settled the land it had claimed.

B. Three expeditions were sent from New Spain - one by sea and two by land.

C. A mission was established in San Diego and Portolá found Monterey Bay.

II. Anza Takes Another Route

B. The route proved as difficult as the route from Baja California.
