Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 2, Lesson 2: Living with the Land (pp. 37-41)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interdependence The early Californians learn to live with the land and each other.
- Discuss with students the different resources that were available to the early Californians depending on where they lived. What problems might this have posed for the settlers? Suggest three volunteers role play how a fisher, a boat builder, and a farmer help each other. Use the role play to discuss the idea of trade among these groups.

Check for Understanding
- Invite students to create a folktale that describes one trader's adventure trading with the three tribes. If students are familiar with Coyote tales, they may want to write their own version of a Coyote tale.
- Have students create a flag or emblem for each tribe. It should include pictures showing what the tribe was best known for and possibly reflect the region they lived in.
