The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Rights Some of California's ethnic communities fought for civil rights during the 1960s and 1970s.

Use the pie chart on page 274 to initiate a discussion about the three different ethnic groups shown on the graph. Then discuss the discrimination these groups faced as discussed in the lesson. Invite students to compare whether the discrimination described in the lesson has changed today. Ask if there are other groups who have felt discrimination in California, and if so which ones?
