The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change Both suburbs and cities grew
and changed after World War II.
- Have each student write one fact that pertains to the growth in
California suburbs after World War II and another fact that pertains
to the changes in the cities. Invite students to share their facts.
The class can guess whether the fact relates to the city or the suburbs.
Use students' facts to discuss how life changed during this time.

- Have students write and perform a television commercial that would appeal
to the new ways people lived in the suburbs and the cities of the 1950s.
- Have students work together to draw neighborhood mural scenes of the
suburbs and the cities during the 1950s, including ethnic California neighborhoods.
