    A. A lawyer named Hiram Johnson worked with the Progressives to pass laws that would stop businesses from controlling the government.

    B. He ran for governor and won. He set up rules that stopped the Southern Pacific Railroad from controlling government.

III. Women Bring Change

    A. Women wrote in magazines, newspapers, and books calling for better treatment of workers and families.

    B. Women helped bring about new schools and housing, safer food, and higher pay for laborers.

    C. In 1911, the Progressives passed a law giving California women the right to vote.
