Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 1, Lesson 3: California's Resources (pp. 21-25)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interconnectedness Natural resources can be found throughout California.
- On the board, write the following: Minerals, Forests, Farmland, Water. Ask: What group do all of these things belong to? Write Natural Resources on the board above the names. Point out that California is a state that is filled with many different natural resources. Discuss where some of these resources are found using a state map.

Check for Understanding
- Have students turn the headings and subheadings from the lesson into questions. For example, the heading "Caring for California's Resources" could be phrased: How do we care for California's resources? Students can then answer the questions they generate.
- Have students divide a paper in half. At the top of each section, have them write a key vocabulary term: natural resources, human resources. Under each, students should illustrate at least five examples. They might draw examples, paste magazine pictures, or combine newspaper clippings.
