Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 7, Lesson 1: Life in Plymouth (pp. 116-119)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Scarcity Aided by the Wampanoag Indians, the Pilgrims faced many challenges to survive and build a colony in Plymouth.
- Begin by asking students to close their eyes and imagine they lived long ago. Say: You are on a large, wooden sailing ship when you reach a shore that seems totally deserted. There are no people in sight, and you don't know who, if anyone, lives on this land. It is cold, and winter is coming. You have been traveling for months, and there is not much food left on the ship. Then have them open their eyes and ask: How would you feel in this situation? What is the first thing you would do? What things would you do to survive the winter?

Check for Understanding
- Have students write a diary entry for one of the Pilgrims who landed in Plymouth on the day of the Thanksgiving feast.
- Have students draw four panels labeled Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Have them draw a picture in each panel to show what happened to the Pilgrims during each of the seasons, beginning with Winter when they first landed.
