The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Culture The Navajo used sand paintings to help sick people get well.
- Begin by discussing the different ceremonies students are familiar with, such as religious or club ceremonies. As students describe each ceremony, have them explain what the ceremony means to the people who participate. Encourage them to share any knowledge they have about Navajo ceremonies and tell them they will be reading about one which was often used to heal the sick.

- Ask students to write a paragraph that tells how the Navajo use sand paintings to help sick people get well.
