The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interdependence The importance of woodlands to humans, animals, and the land shows how living things depend on one another.

To begin your study of woodlands, brainstorm a list of reasons why woodlands are important. Encourage students to think of natural beauty, shelter for humans and animals, recreation, and food for humans and animals. Tell students that they will discover even more reasons why woodlands are important to all living things.

Check for Understanding

Have students choose an animal that lives in a forest and write about how the animal needs trees.
