Chapter 10, Lesson 3: Recycling to Save Our Resources (pp. 208-211)

The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Scarcity To make our garbage problem smaller, we can recycle our natural resources.

Begin by asking students to share any recycling they do at home or at school. Encourage them to tell what they recycle and how they do it. Then have students gather objects in the classroom that can be recycled.

Display a plastic milk jug and ask students to brainstorm ways that the jug can be recycled, or used in another way.

Check for Understanding

Write these two statements on the chalkboard:

Recycling is a waste of time.
Recycling can save the earth.
Encourage a class debate by dividing the class in half. Have half the class argue reasons for the first statement, and the other half give reasons for the second statement.
Have groups of students create posters that encourage people to recycle. Label the posters "Recycling to Save Our Resources" and display them in a public place.
