The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change The effects of rivers on land are excellent examples of how places change over time.
- Locate major rivers on a physical map of the United States. Have students trace the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Colorado, and Columbia rivers with their fingers and show the direction they think each river flows. Look for other physical features, such as mountains, lakes, and canyons, and discuss how rivers might affect or be affected by these features.

Check for Understanding
- Have students write a paragraph telling how rivers can shape the land.
- Have students paint a mural showing how rivers can change the land and how rivers can be both helpful and harmful to a community.
