Chapter 10, Lesson 2: Protecting Our Resources (pp. 204-207)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflict To protect our natural resources, we protect the air, water, and soil from pollution.
- Ask students to describe what they think pollution is. Draw a large concept web titled Pollution with these subheadings: Water, Land, Air. Then have students list examples of each type of pollution and talk about the ways that pollution can harm each of the natural resources. Conclude the discussion by asking them to suggest ways each pollutant can be stopped.

Check for Understanding
- Ask students to write a letter to their local newspaper editor that asks people to help stop pollution of either air, water, or soil. Have them list reasons why the pollution should be stopped as well as suggest ways people can help prevent it.
- Have students think of one form of pollution and draw a picture of a place (such as a park or a city) showing the problem. Then have them draw a picture of the same place after people have solved the pollution problem (by the use of filters, conservation, cleaning, or writing letters).
