The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Change, Technology, and Contributions Thomas Edison changed the world with his inventions.
- Talk with students about inventions. Display several common inventions found in the classroom such as a pencil sharpener or a television, and ask students why they think someone thought that invention was needed.
- Point to a light bulb, a record or CD player, a computer, or other technologies around the classroom. Ask students whether these inventions make life easier and more enjoyable than it might be without them. Encourage students to explain their answers.
Check for Understanding
- Have volunteers pretend they are Thomas Edison. Have them explain how he invented the light bulb.
- Ask students to illustrate a poster about Thomas Edison and draw some of his inventions.
