The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Values The flag and the Statue of Liberty are meaningful symbols of our country.
- Display an American flag and ask students to talk about what they think the flag stands for or symbolizes. Talk about the 50 stars that stand for the fifty states, and then ask them what they think the stripes might represent. Ask students when they might use a flag and tell why they think a flag is important to the people in our country.
- Show a picture of the Statue of Liberty and tell students where it stands. Read aloud the three quotes on page 120 that people have said about the Statue of Liberty. Then have students discuss what the statue means to them.

- Have students finish this sentence:
The Statue of Liberty stands for ___________.
Ask them to illustrate their sentences.
- Ask students to draw a symbol of the United States.
