Lesson at a Glance
Unit 2, Lesson 6: A Long Time Here (pp. 90-95)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Family History and Traditions Melanie Begaye learned skills, stories, and language from her Navajo family.
- Before reading the chapter, look at the illustration on pages 90-91 and tell children they will be learning about the traditions the girl, Melanie, learned from her Navajo family. Preview the lesson pictures together and have children make predictions about what traditions they think Melanie has learned. Record their predictions and revise or add to them after you finish reading the chapter together.
- Ask children what traditions they have learned from their own family. Have them include stories they have heard, things their family likes to do together for recreation, any arts or crafts their family has kept as a tradition, songs they like to sing, and special foods their family likes to eat.
Check for Understanding
- Ask children to write a list of things Melanie might do in one day that tell about her traditions learned from her Navajo family.
- Ask children to draw a picture of a tradition Melanie learned from her Navajo family.
