Some People I Know
Lesson at a Glance
Unit 2, Lesson 4: Life Long Ago (pp. 64-69)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Family History and Ancestors David Schweizer learns about his ancestors that came from England and Germany.
- Before reading pages 64-69, display a map of the world and tell children about your ancestors. Tell children what country your ancestors came from and what they did before they came to the United States. Tell children how you found out about your ancestors and show any pictures you might have.
- Ask children to tell what they know about their ancestors. Have them point to their countries of origin and tell what kind of work they did before they came to the United States. (For some children, learning about ancestors may be a sensitive topic. Use your judgement according to your classroom situation.)
Check for Understanding
- Have children imagine they are Hedwig Neustadt. Have them tell what she might have told David about the history of her life.
- As you ask children the following questions about David, have them point to the pictures in the chapter that answer the questions: Where does David's great grandmother Hedwig Neustadt come from? Can you show me a picture of her? How did David's Great Grandfather George Wooten travel to Oklahoma? What animals did the Wootens use to help them with their work on the farm in Flippin, Arkansas? What country did the Wooten family come from before they lived in the United States? Where does David live today?
