Lesson at a Glance
Unit 4, Lesson 3: A Letter to Mexico (pp. 136-139)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Location and Similarities/Differences A first grade student tells about sending and receiving mail from her cousin in Mexico.
- Describe the process of mailing a letter and talk about the trip it takes
from sender to receiver. Point out that the post office helps people stay in
touch with others near and far away. Then have students trace the route of Anita's letter on the illustration on page 137. Ask students to help you to list the things Anita learned about Mexico from the package Pablo sent her. If students have ever lived in or visited Mexico, invite them to share their experiences.
Check for Understanding
- Have students role-play a telephone conversation between Anita and Pablo talking about their letters and packages.
- Have students work in groups to make the contents for two packages - one from
the United States and one from Mexico. The contents can be cutout pictures. They should reflect what students learned about each country from the lesson.
