I Know a Place
Lesson at a Glance
Unit 4, Lesson 2: Across Canada by Train (pp. 126-129)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Location/Cultures Students learn about the location and the people of our neighboring country, Canada.
- Together have students look at each photograph on the lesson pages. They can help you write picture captions for the photographs. Write the captions on the board below the name of the photo's location. Ask students to tell about the things that Sam saw on his trip to Canada that are the same as in the United States. Ask which things were different.
Check for Understanding
- Designate different desks around the room as the places where Sam stopped in Canada. Label the desks and have children make travel posters for each location. Have students come up with a list of questions visitors might ask about the places. Students can pretend to travel to each stop. Have pairs of students ask and answer questions about each location.
- Reread Sam's journal entries to students. Have them make a picture journal of Sam's trip.
