I Know a Place
Lesson at a Glance
Unit 2, Lesson 2: The Empty Lot (pp. 30-33)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Neighborhood A new home under construction helps focus on the concept of neighborhood.
- Write the key words from the lesson on the board: neighborhood, grow. Explain that cities and towns have neighborhoods where people live in houses or apartment houses. Neighborhoods can change over time. Give examples such as the construction of new streets and houses or new businesses or stores coming into a neighborhood. Encourage children to think of ways their neighborhood has changed and grown.
Check for Understanding
- In small groups, have children discuss and possibly write answers to these questions:
Why did Charles's father keep saying, "Wait and see"?
In the end, Charles says "Dad was right." Why was Dad right?
- Invite children to draw their own picture map showing the neighborhood around their school. Help them to label the buildings, streets, and businesses.
