Unit 1, Lesson 1: Friends at School (pp. 4-5)

The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Rules and Respect By listening to an ancient fable and responding to real-life school scenes, children learn that respecting and helping others can lead to friendship.

After children have listened to the fable "The Lion and the Mouse," write on the chalkboard the moral Friends come in all sizes. Begin a discussion about "big" friends and "small" friends. Ask children to name big and small friends they know, which may include anyone or anything they especially like to be with--pets, toys, siblings, parents, grandparents, teachers, playmates, books, songs, etc.

On chart paper, write
A friend is _________________.
Invite children to take turns finishing the sentence, each in their own words. As they dictate their responses, write them on the chart. Model as necessary.
Assign partners and have children pantomime or role play ways to be a friend. Pair children who are just learning to speak English with English speakers.
