Safety and Environmental Considerations
Students should be given instructions about the need for safety when working with chemical substances, tools, and heat sources. Adult permission and supervision should be required when using any potentially dangerous or hazardous materials. A review of each student's materials list on the Intent to Invent form will alert teachers to unsafe materials or other potential hazards.
Students should also be taught to be aware of the environmental impact of inventions. You may wish to discuss the environmental impact of inventions such as the automobile, nuclear power, chemical fertilizers, and spray cans. This is also a good time to encourage the wise use of materials so that waste can be avoided.
Children should learn that being an inventor demands certain responsibilities. Respect for the materials they use, in terms of both safety and resourcefulness, is a goal of the Invention Convention. The task of teaching this respect should be shared by teachers and parents.
