Unit 6E, Oceanography
Unit Project: Filming the Ocean Depths
Can you image yourself living in an undersea lodge? What do you think this marine
world would be like? Research ocean organisms and topography and prepare a
moving picture of the undersea environment.
Project Link 1 (Chapter 1, page E23)
Imagine that you are promoting a brand-new undersea nature lodge.
Visitors will get to and from the lodge in a deep-diving vehicle used for ocean
research. Your presentation will include a moving picture of what visitors see,
a taped narration, and other materials.
Research how organisms have adapted to living in the ocean depths. Gather
pictures of some of these organisms and use them to create a storyboard for your
moving picture. Use phosphorescent paint for the scenes showing phosphorescent
fish.

To decide where to build your lodge, you will need to know about the topography
of the ocean. Draw illustrations showing the topography of the area around your
undersea lodge. Before you build, consider the difficulties of locating the lodge
too far from land or too deep in the ocean. Think about the safety features that
you will need to include in your lodge.

Plan a number of trips from your lodge. Take into account how deep-sea currents
affect sea life, visibility, and the stability of the vehicle. Make a map of the
routes your undersea vehicle will take. Describe and illustrate the sea creatures
your visitors will meet along the way.
