Unit 6C, The Nature of Matter
Unit Project: Putting on a Science Magic Show
Learn magic tricks based on scientific principles and then put on a magic show.
Project Link 1 (Chapter 1, page C27)
Learn to do two magic tricks that are based on scientific principles. With the trick The Disappearing Liquid you will find out what happens when you mix different liquids, and some liquid disappears. The Great Tissue Bust will test your strength against a tissue. When you have completed the tricks, describe each trick and explain why it works.

Learn to do three magic tricks that are based on scientific principles. When doing the trick What Color Is Blue Ink? decide whether ink is a mixture or a compound. In The Invisible Force, explore why an index card can be used as a cap to keep a glass full of water from spilling. The Leakproof Strainer may make you wonder how one liquid can keep another liquid from passing through the holes in a strainer. When you have completed the tricks, describe each and explain why it works.

Learn to do four more magic tricks based on scientific principles. In the trick Crystal Creation you will make crystals appear in a liquid. In Parting Pepper you will make pepper grains scatter across the surface of a liquid without disturbing the liquid. Finally, with the Dissolving Pictures trick, you will get to make and use a solution that can transfer a picture from a newspaper onto a piece of paper. When you have completed the tricks, describe each trick and explain why it works.
