Unit 5C, Matter and Energy
Unit Project: Collecting and Displaying Samples of Matter
Collect samples and pictures of different forms of matter. Then identify the
elements, compounds, and mixtures in each item. Organize and display your
collection.
Project Link 1 (Chapter 1, p. C17)
Work with other students to collect, identify, and organize
samples and pictures of matter in its various forms. Investigate your environment
to discover how many different kinds of matter you can find. Your samples should
be in small amounts and good for displaying in your classroom. Cut out pictures
from old magazines to show samples that are impossible to collect.

Use reference books or Internet links to identify and label each of your samples.
Identify each sample as an element, compound, or mixture. For each compound, find
out the names of some or all of the elements it contains. For each mixture, find
out the names of some or all of the substances it contains. Use this information
to write labels for each of your samples.
