Unit 5B, The Solar System and Beyond

Unit Project: Designing a Space Station

Use what you are learning about space to turn your classroom into a space-station simulator.

Project Link 1 (Chapter 1, p. B19)
Build a navigation pod in a corner of your classroom. On large sheets of paper, draw windows for your space station. Through the pod's window, show constellations. Use your telescopic camera to take pictures of certain stars.

Design and build a space telescope for your space station. Draw the space telescope as you would see it through one of the space-station windows. Then draw some of the stars, galaxies, and other objects that you might observe with the space telescope.

Create life-support areas for your space station and decide what things you would need to stock them. List all the personal gear you might need for a space flight. Plan a space meal. Consider only those foods that astronauts can store and eat in zero gravity.
