Plant Classification

Nonseed Plants do not reproduce with seeds. Examples include mosses and ferns.

  • Mosses lack true roots, stems, and leaves. They can reproduce by means of spores.
  • Liverworts lack true roots, stems, and leaves. They grow in moist places such as along the banks of streams.
  • Ferns have roots, stems, and leaves and reproduce by spores. They have special tubes that carry water from the roots to other parts of the plant. The leaves of ferns are called fronds.
  • Horsetails reproduce by spores and have underground stems. Horsetails look like paintbrushes.

Seed Plants do reproduce with seeds. Examples include flowering plants and conifers.

  • Conifers are plants that produce seeds in cones. They have roots, stems, and leaves. Conifers can be small shrubs or tall trees.
  • Flowering plants have roots, stems, and leaves and reproduce by seeds formed in flowers. There are two kinds of flowering plants, monocots and dicots. A monocot produces seeds that are in one piece. A dicot produces seeds that have two sections.
