J. David Cooper
J. David Cooper is currently Adjunct Professor of Education at Ball State University, where he has been Professor
and director of Reading. Dr. Cooper is the author of Literacy: Helping Children Construct Meaning,
Improving Reading Comprehension; and co-author of several other books, including The What and How of Reading
Instruction, second edition; and The Classroom Reading Program in the Elementary School.
He has served as a reviewer for The Reading Teacher, the Journal of Reading, and the yearbook of the National
Reading Conference. Dr. Cooper is a member of numerous professional organizations, including
the International Reading Association, where he has served on and chaired many committees.
He has taught in elementary and high schools and has worked with educators in all fifty states and in five countries.
Recently, he has conducted educational seminars for teachers throughout the United States for The Education Center
(TEC), a prominent teacher professional development group. Dr. Cooper's research has had practical results for
classroom teachers nationwide, and he has advised major school districts, state departments of education and
the U.S. Department of Education. In 1990 he received the Outstanding Service Award, Indiana Reading Professors.
Dr. Cooper was a coordinating author of Houghton Mifflin Reading programs, 1986-1993, an author of
Houghton Mifflin Reading/Language Arts, and a consulting author on Houghton Mifflin's Spanish reading program,
Celebremos la literatura.
