MINI-LESSON
Goal Setting
Teach/Model
Ask students if they have ever gone on a trip. Discuss steps in planning
the trip, emphasizing that the most important decision was the first one:
where to go. Tell students that they are on a learning journey, and they
will each need to decide where it is they want to go.
Practice/Apply
Ask students to brainstorm a list of things they want to learn this year.
Encourage them to be specific in their goals, such as "learn to figure out
unknown words" rather than "be a better reader." Guide them in selecting
two or three of these goals to work toward in the next three months.
