Charting Word Histories

Write these terms on the board:

Ferris wheel, lima bean, sandwich, saxophone, tarantula.

Ask students to say each term after you and then look up each term in a class dictionary. Tell students to make a chart for the terms, using these column headings:

Term, Meaning, Named for

Ask students to add a drawing of each object next to its name.
